I carry the fire...

I've got bucketloads of blame stored in my attic. Most of it carries your name, but while I keep it neatly labeled I have no intention of creating a coastline of misery. Instead I hope to distill it into something more useful over time. So I got these buckets and barrels and sometimes I go up there for a bath. Because even attic space is limited. And because every barrel carries my name as well.

Just a few days ago I realized that there are seemingly no limits to the varieties of self-harm. And that self-harm had become one of my trademark strategies. Not that this general tendency comes as a genuine surprise really. But over the last few years I had tried so hard to eliminate all the little prompts and opportunities for hurting myself. I'd stopped cutting several years ago. I'd abandoned suicidal thoughts by and large. I had cut out all opportunities for substance abuse by quitting smoking and drinking. I thought I was in the green. In retrospect that seems obnoxiously naive.
I hadn't recovered. I neglected friends and would-be-lovers that were good for me and I prolonged stressful and hurtful situations usually resolving them in preemptively hurting myself. I shied away from establishing new relationships. And to top it all of, I managed to convince myself that I was getting better.
Truth is, that although I am now painfully aware of my inept symptom elimination, I have no idea how to even begin recovery. I will try to reestablish some of the friendships I put on hold. Why doesn't this life come with a manual?

I am not sure when my perspective on this changed. But somehow this frenzy about happiness that keeps society on its toes these days weaseled its way into my head. Negative emotions were to be kept at bay now and somedays I couldn't tell, if I was just sad or if I was in fact living with a disease. Actually, I am still not sure about that. I have taken to compartmentalizing and I created a valve to manage all the pain, sorrow, boredom and gloominess this life has to offer. Managing feelings! As if that was even something one could do!
Sometimes I even thought of myself as a sad person. Which is nonsense! I have dark moments and golden days, lonely afternoons and social weekends, blissful runs and nights of self-doubt. I have them. I cry when I watch Grey's Anatomy and I feel unreasonably cheerful when watching a dance movie. This is it. I am entitled to my misery. And I am entitled to my joy as well. My enthusiasm for planning get-aways and new beginnings is as valid as my unwillingness to face the world on some days. Don't let anybody belittle your pain. It is yours. And maybe this is one of the greatest wonders that I have discovered so far: That you can feel like this, like your whole world is crushed into a million pieces - yet, you live. You still live and eventually, unexpectedly and rush of warm air will have you smiling again. You just need to hold on a little longer.

Everything from my mind to my body tells me that there is no purpose to this life. Maybe not for anyone, but certainly not for me. Isso. And my daily battle for the past months has been trying to get impervious to the implications behind this. Nevertheless, this purest kind of hedonism scares me. I have to make myself believe, that I am reason enough to go on living. No world to save. No lives to alter. I am here merely by accident. Nihilism is not for tender people. I am not sure where to go from here. Uncovering the folly in all our being? Or giving in to it, pretending that there was a greater meaning behind the running of the world... Die Frage ist nicht länger Warum. Nur noch Wie.

Being nochalant has never gotten anyone very far

"You know, when we first started seeing each other I wasn't sure if I could deliver. He seemed to be into this up to his neck and I was just... I had no guarantees, no plan or even wish on how things should turn out. I felt I might be taking him for a rollercoaster ride of attraction and longing and deception. But he seemed so unfraid, so certain, so... I took the plunge. And I discovered that I could do this. I could take the plunge again and again everyday. I could dare to be commited, to be head over heels, to be hopelessly, madly in love with him. There was nothing deceiving about it. I was in for a lifelong romance made up of day-to-day "I do"s. Even when I was angry with him. Even when I hated him. I still made the decision to be his. I still was certain that he should be part of the mess I come home to.
Funnily though, the more certain I became about my own commitment, the more important was his. What if, one day, he questioned his decision to be with me? What if his life could function just as well without me in it? Where would that leave me? Would I be able to loosen this bond again? I went a little crazy there. And somewhere along those lines, I lost him. I suppose he is not coming back. Ever. Yet, my heart hasn't grown out of choosing him. Each morning, each day, every night. I deliver. I want him to know all the small things about me. Like, how the smell of strawberries makes me so happy, I eat them even though I don't really like the taste. Or that I block the shower with 7 different shower gels that I use according to my mood of the day. I wish he wanted to know that. Because I let him in. And now I cannot seem to get him out again."

--

"When I married her, I opened my world to her. I made her a part of my life. And along with her came her family, her hometown, her jokes and childhood fairytales, her dreams and adventures, her ambitions and scars, her traditions, friends, her favourite colour on the walls of our living room and her most precious books on my nightstand so I could read her page by page. My favourite music didn't become hers. But she listened to it while doing the dishes and it made her smile because it was a part of me.
When you share a life it is impossible to count all the things that you share. And most of the time, it is only when you try to separate those lives again that you notice that you will get out half a life only, if you take away what you brought in.
Had you told me this morning that I would be without her tonight... I would've had trouble breathing from laughing so hard. Laughing at the absurdity of this incomprehensible half-life. It will be mostly pain for a while now - but after that? Does her hometown become a blank spot on the map? Do I leave behind her hilarious New Year's ritual? Shall I repaint our flat? Abandon it altogether? And if I don't - who would be willing to suffer through this life with me? "

--

Life doesn't make sense. Either we make sense of it, or it is all just an arbitrary line of actions. I am drawing a black X on my chest. Just in case you needed help identifying the target.

"I want you to die

the way I died." And isn't that all kinds of wrong? Isn't it vile and ugly and selfish and tremendously sad? It certainly is the reason why humans do not come with superpowers. Because they stop caring about the world and the greater good, once they are thrown off balance.

There's no point in crossing your fingers for this Friday. What hasn't happened in those last 20 years, will surely not come about now. There's no reason to keep holding on to the misery and the carelessness. It is ugly. And tremendously sad. No superpowers. No apocalypse. Just the two voices in your head. One is saying "push through"... and the other one is lying.

Now that is all I've had to say within the last two years

summed up in a two minute dance performance. Impressive.

Ok, Anna Calvi strikes me as slightly uncanny, but this music video is definitely one of my favourites.
Other than that I've come to the conclusion that I cannot be sorry for myself like that for more than two days. So in case this continues, I will embrace the stupidity I was born with, go out there and get me a bloody nose. Nothing like a mess, to clean things up, right?

Freitag, November 09, 2012

Fingers crossed for you

People are falling apart out there. They are hurting themselves and cutting and transferring all their bruises from the inside to the outside. People who are trying to numb themselves with pain. I know that. Hell, I've been there. The toughest decision is not to take it out on yourself. And you have to make it day in, day out. The pain will not go away immediately. It will linger. It will almost tear you apart. But once you've found a valve for it - one that is not diminishing yourself, because let's face it: we cannot feast on ourselves and expect to not fade away - once you've found a valve, you will experience the pain and the dark going through you. Still scary, still nightmareish horror. But you will grow. You will be able to let go of the sorrow and let the good linger. Everyday a bit longer.
You cannot cut yourself down, like the rest of the world does. Reach out for yourself, be good to yourself. You only have that one body, that one soul. Your dreams and hopes and talents and weaknesses and fears and strengths - you need to hold on to them. Stop the cutting, the purging, the starving, stop beating yourself up. Show mercy. You can do it. Bit by bit. Step by step.

All of this is tearing...

I've been slacking a bit during the last days. I haven't been working. Or correcting my thesis. Or calling my grandpa. Or doing my laundry. I've been to the doctor and I spoke at the welcome lecture for the first year students, I met with my brother, painted our kitchen, rearranged the furniture, uploaded files to the e-learning platform, saw a dance performance in the city, went out to a pub... and still. I feel like I am hiding out from my life again. It makes me nauseous.
I still miss you. I still dream of you. I still think some great force should come along and fix this, please. Sometimes I think it would help if I had somebody to blame. Yet, I broke it off and am thus the only one to point fingers at. I am trying to negotiate with the dream factory in my head to cut back on your smile and your body, the hugs and kisses and the sex... but my brain just laughs at me and I am torn between sleeping forever and never going to sleep again.
Admitting defeat is not my style. I guess part of me will never stop hoping. I don't understand how I can love you so much. I don't get how people rationalize. I don't know how to stop setting out for the impossible again and again. I am trying to step down.
No christmas calendar this year, I guess. I'd already been collecting ideas... for another life maybe. For when we decide to make use of our superpowers. Maybe. And until then I will practice breathing exercises to avoid crying in the mornings. I will write the word "never" on all walls and try to believe it. I will demand less and get to the point where I master unconditionality.

I want to give up. I want to give in. I want to get over the strong notion of never wanting to be touched by anyone else. And yet I seem to have my very own definition of faithfulness...

[Sometimes I hope I die soon. So all of this can make sense...]

Haven't we been here already?

The challenge for today is breathing. In and out. No sobbing. Just breathing.

My happiness is my own responsibility. I can choose this. Or I can choose to be awesome instead. I will try hard to choose awesome tomorrow. Or the day after. Or the day after that.

I've been with one of the greatest people this world has to offer. I will try to value this. To hold my head high. To grab this life with my hands. I'm starting today. With breathing. In and out. No sobbing.

---

Wow. I imagined this moment as a happier one. I'd planned going to Vienna the instant this thesis was finished. Just for a day. Just so I could let you know how great it feels to have this off my chest. Wow. Things change.

Wir stellen fest:

So richtig durchdacht war das offenbar nicht. Ich will dich anrufen.

I concluded that if there was a way

it would include this station either way. No matter if we decided to go there now or in 4 years' time.

I found the love of my life. With a less-than-elegant timing. And ill-equipped. But we tried nevertheless. Tried and tried. For bright mornings and worried nights for a whole new notion of distance and seemingly unlimited intoxication. And now we're here. Giving in finally.
I found the love of my life. Yesterday, I told her our relationship was over. I don't love her one bit less than I did at the very beginning. I am inclined to say I love her even more. And still.
There's no safety net. No masterplan. No we'll-get-back-together-once-we've-sorted-this-out. I broke up with the love of my life. So we could get out alive. Nothing more. Nothing less.
No future promises. No this-will-save-us-attitude. I found the love of my life. And then I broke up with her. It might be the stupidest thing I've ever done. Or it might have been the only reasonable option I had. But what is reason?

Not happy

Sometimes I think, happiness is not for me. Only Wednesday I wanted to write that I am starting to see the appeal in the concept of rest days. Turns out, I don't. Rest days are the worst and I spent most of today in bed trying to get it together. Just an hour ago I got around to finally doing at least something productive with this day, but I think that emotionally I am more on the fragile side still. At the point where I want to smash it all so I can stop being afraid about fucking it up. How ironic.

I'm breathing.

Hard. My eyes are tearing up from unslept hours. And you will say goodbye soon. You will know how to go to bed where I don't. You will shut the light and close your eyes, where my head is echoing a thunderstorm. I know. I know. What can I hope for? And do I dare? I'm breathing. Hard. I'm breathing. You'll go. You go, I'll wait! Do I dare? I won't look down, I know the odds. The endless fall, the futile attempts of flying. I'm breathing. And you will say goodbye soon. I know.

Had I known

Had I known

That I’d offer my life to you
That I’d rip open my chest in hope
Cut my throat in the morning dew,
and close my eyes to limit the scope

Had I known this would feel like a landslide
Like the darkest, coldest of days,
a polar expedition to not be at your side,
a thorough feeling of „not okay“

Had I known that it’d hurt just the same
For long periods inbetween,
and the weeks when you’re far away
like a shadow from where I’ve been

The black dog won’t disappear -
Had I known!
I wouldn’t have come here
On my own

Krachen gehen

Was bleibt mir anderes übrig?

And is it true that devils end up like you? - if only you knew.
So weit, so gut. Es kommt immer wieder Licht. Manchmal Tageslicht, manchmal PeterLicht. They tried to make me go to rehab. I said yes, yes, yes.

Was ich sagen will: Gleich vorbei.

Ich will beides.

Yay! I already had the impression I was feeling too good...

Ich bin zurück. Zurück in Deutschland, zurück in Leipzig. Eben wieder hier.

This is defeat.

Sonnenuntergansszenario. Nimm es mit. Als Kevlarweste für Zukünftiges. Ich wünsch dir Glück.
